The 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Award (TGMA) provided an award worthy of the name. It was given for a Lifetime Achievement Award to legendary gospel icon Yaw Sarpong in recognition of his establishment of a foundation for the growth and nurturing of gospel music in Ghana that is several decades old.
With over forty years in the music ministry and a remarkable record, Yaw Sarpong has been able to touch generations with timeless songs that heal and strengthen faith and hope. Songs such as “Wo Haw Ne Sen?” and “Oko Yi” are almost inescapable in Ghanaian Christian worship and culture.
The tribute performance, which seemed to be a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, must have moved the audience as fellow musicians and admirers lauded the man whose music has transcended time and language, going beyond denominational barriers.
This will cement his position as a pioneer in gospel music in this country and a conduit of divine inspiration through music. Thus, his legacy continues to inspire many artists and believers along the way.
